Pediatric Orthopedics

Pediatric Orthopedics in Kansas City

Kids are the most active members of our families and suffer musculoskeletal injuries just like adults. However, because children are still growing, their bones have growth plates which often make their injuries different than adult injuries.

Athletic injuries account for a substantial number of pediatric musculoskeletal injuries, and many of these are unique to children who are still growing. Inflammation of the growth plates (known as apophysitis or osteochondrosis) is common in active kids, and examples include Osgood-Schlatter disease, jumper’s knee, and Sever’s disease. Overuse injuries like Little Leaguer’s Shoulder and elbow OCD (“osteochondritis dissecans”) are common in young throwing athletes.

Many pediatric conditions are best treated without surgery, and our clinicians are skilled in guiding parents and children through diagnosis and treatment.
